The field contains two of the three design conventions of the Afshar “Dragon and Phoenix” design; the horizontal palmette (the phoenix) and rosette. Parviz Tanavoli refers to these palmettes as “demon heads”. The Afshars are noted for weaving closures with fine mixed flat-weave techniques as this piece illustrates.
